‘The ball is in Kenya’s court’

William Ruto is the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya. After five years of campaigning, they were finally there last August: elections! Where, in the past, this could be a tense time, now things have largely remained calm.

Against all odds, Ruto won. The other candidate, Raila Odinga, had been put forward by the previous President. It was actually assumed that he would win the majority of votes, no matter how. Kenyan politics had been ruled by three families since its independence in 1963 and was not very democratic for many years. That the power of this dynasty has now finally been broken carries hope for the future. (..)
