Labor and co-generation block expansion of French horticulture

    The call for local products is growing louder among French consumers. The French government, seeking to become less dependent on imports, supports this trend. It is questionable, however, whether French growers will succeed in capturing a larger share of their home market; labour is expensive and cogeneration is losing support.

    The Covid crisis caused a trend acceleration in France as local-for-local production increasingly gained traction among French consumers. Antoine Lepilleur of greenhouse construction company the Richel Group noticed that even his large clients, such as supermarkets, were actively seeking partnerships with French growers in the region. ‘Supermarkets aim to buy locally, a trend which is growing stronger and stronger.’ And there is another trend that benefits the horticultural sector in France: cities are greening, and consumers increasingly acknowledge the importance of a healthy, green environment.
