Colombian hydrangea cultivation is stagnating

Colombian flower exports are still dominated by rose. Hydrangea went through a huge growth, but that seems to be coming to an end now. Figures of Asocolflores (flower exporters) and ICA (Colombian Agricultural Institute) show a decline in volume, value and number of producers.

The second largest flower exporter in the world, Colombia, is known for its roses, just like Andean neighbour Ecuador. But unlike its southern neighbour, the country bordering both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans also has a flourishing hydrangea cultivation. How did they get started with this product, how did it develop, and what are the specific challenges for hydrangea growers in Colombia?

Journalist Paul Smits spoke with three experts to find out more about the Colombian hydrangea cultivation. Two of the three experts are from the large companies San Francisco Gardens and Monte Carlo. The other one used to work as sales manager with Flor Andina. Nowadays, he represents several different flower exporters in Germany.
