Girl Power

    It is a frequent problem around the world: gender inequality in the labour market. Ecuador is no different. Women are underrepresented in most sectors, earn less for doing the same job and are simply less likely to find a job. Average female unemployment in Ecuador is 65% higher than male unemployment, and figures show that the Covid crisis has only caused this rate to increase further.

    Something had to be done, Ecuadorian policymakers thought. So, during last year, they were working hard on a new law to encourage employers to hire more women and better protect women’s rights. Last month Congress passed the law, which now goes by the fancy name of ‘The Violet Economy Law’. If the President ratifies it this week, the new law will be a reality. (..)
