Onderzoek toont aan dat het omvormen van heestervakken tot bloemenweides leidt tot een forse toename van het aantal geleedpotigen. Tegelijkertijd nemen de kosten voor onderhoud sterk af.
Onderzoekers van de universiteit van Darmstadt onderzochten wat het omvormen van vakken met uitheemse heesters naar inheemse bloemenweides betekent voor geleedpotigen. Hiervoor onderzochten ze de situatie in vijf gemeenten in de periode 2010-2019. Ook keken ze wat dit betekende voor de kosten van onderhoud. De wetenschappers publiceerden hun bevindingen in Plos One.
Insectensterfte
De aanleiding voor het onderzoek is de sterke afname van het aantal insecten op veel plaatsen. In het stedelijk gebied is de aanleg van bloemenweides een mogelijkheid om insecten te ondersteunen.
Het team stelde de hoeveelheid van 13 geleedpotige families vast. Ze maakten daarbij onderscheid tussen bloemenweide of heesters, leeftijd van de bloemenweide, grootte, locatie en maaibeleid.
Meer dan 200% toename
De meeste taxa van geleedpotigen profiteerden van de omvorming naar bloemenweides. Het aantal beestjes dat de onderzoekers in bodemvallen vingen, was 212% hoger in bloemenweides. Het aantal dat ze met een biocenometer vingen was zelfs 260% hoger dan in de vakken met heesters.
Maairegime
De toename van het aantal insecten stond voor de meeste soorten los van de oppervlakte van het groen. Wel was daarbij het maairegime van grote invloed voor de meeste taxa. In totaal was de dichtheid van geleedpotigen in ongemaaide weides 63% hoger dan in gemaaide weides.
Kosten
Het onderzoek vond plaats in vijf Duitse gemeenten. De kosten van het onderhoud van het groen waren gemiddeld 5x lager voor bloemenweides dan voor heestervakken.
