2016 has been a very tough year for Esmeralda Farms. Last June, Peter Ullrich, founder and driving force behind one of the largest floricultural companies in the world, passed away. In August, their farm in Ethiopia was attacked by rebels. Present owner Clarisse Ullrich decided subsequently that Esmeralda would cease their activities in Africa. And the office in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands, was shut down as well. In the beginning of December, Clarisse Ullrich tells us her story. “What would you do? We lost millions in Ethiopia. Would you invest another couple million to repair the damage, knowing that the same thing might happen again? Probably not!”

GreenTech, the trade show for horticulture technology, opened today with the announcement of the winner of the Innovation Award. The overall winner – out of a total of 73 entries – of the Innovation Award 2016 is the Deleafing Robot by Priva from the Netherlands. An international jury awarded two nominations with a Category Award. ISO Plantsampler by ISO group won in the Category Production, HortiMaX-Go! by Ridder Hortimax Group won in the Category Automation Solutions.

Priva is uit 73 inschrijvingen met de Deleafing Robot winnaar van de GreenTech Innovation Award geworden. ISO Group won met de ISO Plantsampler HortiMaX-Go! een category Award. Ridder Hortimax Group won een category award met HortiMaX-Go!

According to Dutch TV show ZEMBLA, the Ethiopian employees of the Dutch rose grower Sher are living in poverty. Allegedly, the company also evades taxes and uses too much water and harmful substances. The item was broadcast on Dutch TV on 18 May 2016. Sher Ethiopia distances themselves from the ZEMBLA broadcast.

Detection systems are not yet widely used in horticulture. Drones have the potential to change all that. Recently, Erik Pekkeriet, a researcher at Wageningen UR is experiencing a newfound interest in detection systems. „That’s great. But the first question shouldn’t be what can a drone be used for but what do I want to measure?”
