Fluctuations in currency rates usually have a big impact on the international flower trade. Since the beginning of last year, the dollar has been gaining ground on the euro, the birr, the Kenyan shilling and the peso. Moreover, inflation affects both Europe and the United States. What does this mean for growers’ revenues and costs in Africa and South America?
“Only companies whose sales are focused on Europe are affected by the weak euro; Colombia as a whole is not.” During the Secret Garden Club House Event at Royal FloraHolland’s headquarters in Aalsmeer on Wednesday 9 November, Augusto Solano briefly outlined the impact of global exchange rates on Colombian ornamentals. Solano is President of Asocolfores, the trade association of flower exporters in the South American country. He stated that only 5% of the export value of Colombian flowers is achieved in Europe (excluding Russia).(..)
