Kekkilä-BVB is investing in new peat alternative Sphagnum

In the next few years, Kekkilä-BVB will harvest a few hundred hectares of Sphagnum. The international company will use the raw material for producing potting soil.

Sphagnum is one of the most important peat alternatives for Kekkilä-BVB. The raw material, also called peat moss, can be collected within 30 years. That is very short compared to the growth of peat which takes thousands of years to form a layer of 1 metre thick. The company will harvest Sphagnum in Finland and built already a special machine for this.
