Flower country the Netherlands alive and kicking

During the first few weeks of the coronavirus outbreak, many plant and flower growers and traders were looking at the Netherlands. In this small country all distribution channels were allowed to stay open unlike in most other European countries. The Dutch market is large. Consumers and companies spend around €1 billion on plants and flowers each year. What are the current developments within this market?

When we’re talking about important markets for plants and flowers from the Netherlands, countries like Germany, the United Kingdom and France are often mentioned. And the impressive export record of more than €6.2 billion achieved by Dutch flower traders last year is highlighted.

Rightly so, of course. But it sometimes feels as if the domestic market doesn’t get much attention. During the second quarter of 2020, the Dutch market was placed under scrutiny. In other countries, many sales points had to close their doors. In the Netherlands, all shops stayed open.
