Het aantal teken dat besmet is met de lymebacterie is het hoogst in de maand juni. Dit valt samen met de periode waarin de meeste tekenbeten worden gemeld. Dat blijkt uit langlopend onderzoek door WUR, RIVM en Natuurkalender.
Van 2009 tot en met 2016 vingen vrijwilligers elke maand teken met een wit doek op steeds dezelfde plek. Dat deden zij in het kader van het Natuurkalenderprogramma van Wageningen University. In twaalf gebieden werden van januari 2009 tot en met juni 2016 bijna 27.000 tekennimfen gevangen.
De maandelijkse vangsten laten zien dat het aantal actieve nimfen vanaf maart toeneemt, piekt in juni en daarna weer geleidelijk daalt. Dit verklaart mede waarom rond die periode zoveel tekenbeten op Tekenradar.nl gemeld worden: ongeveer 50% van alle jaarlijkse tekenbeetmeldingen wordt gedaan in juni en juli.
Vanglocaties
Het aantal gevangen teken varieerde sterk tussen de vanglocaties. In Veldhoven, Wassenaar en Gieten werden de meeste teken gevangen. Kwade Hoek, Schiermonnikoog en Bilthoven hadden de laagste aantallen. Dit betekent niet dat de tekenaantallen overal rond de vanglocaties zo hoog of laag zijn. Op lokaal niveau kunnen de aantallen zelfs binnen honderd meter al sterk verschillen.
Lymebacterie
Van alle gevangen teken zijn er ruim 14.000 door het RIVM getest op de aanwezigheid van de lymebacterie (Borrelia burgdorferi). Over de hele periode bleek gemiddeld 14,7% van de nimfen besmet te zijn. In de tekenvanglocaties is het percentage besmette nimfen in de periode 2009 tot en met 2016 gedaald van 18% in de eerste twee jaar naar 12% in de laatste paar jaar van de studie. Het is nog onduidelijk wat de oorzaak is van deze afname.
Het aantal actieve teken is in de onderzoeksperiode in de twaalf gebieden juist toegenomen. Door deze toename bleef, ondanks de afname van de besmettingspercentages, het aantal besmette teken ongeveer gelijk.
