German associations in the horticultural industry are jointly aiming at less peat in Germany. Not only on nurseries but as well in private gardens.
The Bund deutscher Baumschulen (hardy nursery stock), Zentralverband Gartenbau (floriculture), Handelsverband Heimwerken, Bauen und Garten (construction and landscaping) and Verband Deutscher Garten-Center (garden centres) jointly report that they aim for 50% less professional peat use by 2025. In that year, they aim for at least 20% less peat in potting mix; peat alternatives are therefore necessary. By 2030, the German associations are aiming for at least 30% less peat in potting soil. They also strive for 70% less peat that consumers are using.
The reason for all these targets is the ’Klimaschutzplan 2050’, the German Climate Action Plan with measures to reduce CO2 emissions in Germany.
