Green Cities Europe working towards greening European cities

The European Green City Award 2021 has been won by Le Jardin ­Extraordinaire in Nantes, France. The award is part of the Green Cities ­Europe promotion project that encourages governments to green their cities.

‘Local governments are important parties as they usually make the decisions on the landscaping of cities’, said ENA chair Henk Raaijmakers at the kick-off of the European Green City Award 2021 election on 8 December. The election was held in the Belgian city of Beringen, winner of the first edition of the European Green City Award last year. While part of the meeting took place online, a number of invitees gathered physically in Beringen.

Raaijmakers is proud that thirteen of the sixteen European countries represented in the European Nurserystock Association (ENA) are taking part in the Green Cities Europe project. They were joined by six other countries from outside the EU. ‘As horticultural sector, we have embraced the notion that greenery should not be seen as an expense but rather as a way to generate benefits.’ (..)
