‘Soon after I’d started, I no longer wanted anything else’

Nils Bons runs Bons Gartenbau together with his father. He didn’t always think he’d end up working in the horticulture sector.  No, he was initially more interested in working with agricultural machines. He wanted to be a mechanic or something along those lines. ”But my dad convinced me to join him in the family business. He felt that if I didn’t like it, I could still switch to something else. But soon after I’d started, I no longer wanted anything else; I love the horticultural sector.”

What do you love about your work?

”Working outdoors, seeing the crops grow and the fact that plants and flowers make people happy.”

How do you look back on the past year?“

All in all, 2020 was a good year. Even if we did experience a few dramatic weeks around Easter. We mainly supply to garden centres, DIY-stores and discounters in North Rhine-Westphalia and they all had to close their doors around that time. But as soon as they were allowed to reopen, sales skyrocketed. The past few months were also good; the violas sold particularly well. With all the cold and snowy weather, people were longing for something colourful to cheer them up.”

What are you busy with at the moment?

“Preparing viola orders and potting and pruning fuchsias. It’s quite a busy time. We’re currently working with eight people at our company. Speaking of staff, I have to say that finding enough people is becoming more and more of a challenge.”(..)
